The fact that I was Jewish caused me to have mutiple professorships because I would not take the oath to the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England.

Yet, I published more than 300 papers on topics in pure mathematics, ranging from number theory to matrices/determinants to the theory of equations to modern algebra to the theory of invariants.

Throughout my professional life, I worked closely with my friend Arthur Cayley.

While at John Hopkins University, I was the first Editor of the American Journal of Mathematics.

Known to be a gifted musician and poet, I published The Laws of Verse in 1870.
