In Washington State, 93.5 % of all collisions are due to drunken driving, excessive speed, and/or drugs. The other twelve "top" factors that led to collisions are (in alphabetical order):
- Driver adjusting audio or entertainment
- Driver distractions outside vehicle
- Driver eating or drinking
- Driver grooming
- Driver interacting with passengers, animals or objects in vehicle
- Driver operating handheld telecommunication device
- Driver operating hands-free wireless telecommunications device
- Driver operating other electronic device (computer, navigational devices, etc.)
- Driver reading or writing
- Driver smoking
- Other driver distractions inside vehicle
- Unknown driver distraction
Similarily, out of 57,000 collisions (6-month periodd, 2006), the following are the total number of collisions attributed to the above twelve distraction factors (ordered highest to lowest)
