SuperSize It, Please!
Cargo freighters carrying containers are getting bigger and bigger, or should it be huger and huger. Consider this data about past "biggest" freighters:
Kamakura Maru:
Completed in 1971
Length was 856 feet
Width was 106 feet
Capacity was 2450 containers
Lexa Maersk:
Completed in 2001
Length was 872 feet
Width was 122 feet
Capacity was 4045 containers
Emma Maersk:
Completed in 2006
Length was 1303 feet
Width was 184 feet
Capacity was 11000 containers
Question: Based on these three ships and the trend to "supersize" them, what would you expect the data to be for a freighter under production now and soon to be released:
Malacca-Max:
Completed in 2010 (est)
Length will be ? feet
Width will be ? feet
Capacity will be ? containers
You can find answers to these questions at Wikipedia's description of Malaccamax which has now become "a naval architecture term for the largest size of ship capable of fitting through the 25 metres (82 ft)-deep Strait of Malacca" by Singapore.
