Be Very Wary: To Tarry vs. Marry Harry or Larry?
While browsing through old newspapers in Garner (IA), I found these interesting statistics in the Garner Signal (February 11, 1914).
A mathematician has figured out the chances that a woman has to marry as follows:
- Ages 15-20: 14.5%
- Ages 20-25: 52%
- Ages 25-30: 18%
- Ages 35-40: 3.75%
- Ages 40-45: 2.5%
- Ages 45-50: 0.75%
Question 1: What do these statistics mean. For example, what does it mean that a woman in the age range of 25-30 has a 52% chance of marrying?
Question 2: The above percentages do not add to 100%. Given your response to Question 1, how do you now explain this apparent lapse?
Task: Investigate how those statistics have changed in today's world...95 years later.
