When young, I studied at the Maria Terezia Girls' School in Hungary, then entered the Pázmány Péter University in Budapest to study chemistry.

But, I switched to the field of mathematics and received both a B.A.and a Ph.D....with my dissertation and first published research papers helping to create the modern field of recursive function theory.

Working as a math tutor and writing poetry, it took me ten years to gain my first full-time teaching position at the Budapest Teachers Training College...teaching math there until the college closed ten years later but was able to transfer to a full professorship at Eötvös Loránd University for the next twenty years.

I was the first Hungarian female mathematician to become an Academic Doctor of Mathematics, plus received many honors and prizes for my mathematical and pedological efforts, including being elected as the first female mathematician to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

I was the author of Playing with Infinity: Mathematical Explorations and Excursions, which has been translated into at least fourteen languages (Web-site Side note: One of my favorite books!).

My specialty was number theory, and after some disappointments on my part, László Kalmár suggested I examine Gödel's work, which led to a series of papers that created recursive function theory...which led to my text Recursive Functions in Computer Theory being the second Hungarian mathematical book chosen to be published in the Soviet Union because its subject matter was considered "indispensable to the theory of computers."
