First Responses Fail

Several questions has been making the rounds: You are competing in a running race and you overtake the runner in second place. In what position are you now?

The common response of "first place" is wrong. By passing the person in second place, you will now be in second place....and the passed person is now in third place.

Another related questions: You are competing in a running race and you overtake the runner in last place. In what position are you now?

Again, the common response of "next to last place" is wrong. It is impossible to pass the person in last place, unless he is being lapped on a circular track and race order does not change.

Or try this one: Marie's father has five daughters. One is named Chacha, another is named Cheche, the third is named Chichi, and the fourth is named Chocho. What is the fifth daughter's name?

Did you get Marie? Reread it again closely. And if you like these brain teasers, browse Jonah Probell's collection.
