Why is it that the language spoken in a mathematics classroom, tends not to carry over in real life?

Teachers say "volume" and students think about iPod adjustments or shoe stores! What are the intended and unintended images concocted when students HEAR these terms: plane, product, plot, chord, and normal....and the list could go on....
