The Good Old Days

As mathematics teachers, we sometimes get frustrated at the slowness of change in education.

Yet, things change...

  • In 1745, arithmetic was Yale's entrance requirement
  • In 1820; Harvard "overtook" Yale by requiring algebra on entrance
  • Geometry became a generic entrance requirement during the Civil War in the 1860's
My thoughts...when did it shift to Algebra II...or possibly Calculus AP from students' point-of-view?

Also, with this evidence, it is now clear that change does occur, but one must live basically a century to notice it!
