Vocabulary Test

A recent seller on Ebay advertised an 1845 text called An Introduction to Geometry and the Science of Form by Ann C. Lowell. Though I did not end up as high bidder, I was able to capture some information from the text that proves interesting.

How well do you know your mathematical terms? That is, what are your definitions of the following:

  • lozenge
  • rhomboid
  • vulgar fraction
  • reentering angle
  • salient angle
  • rectlineal figure
  • annular surface
Some of these terms are still around today, but "lozenge" and "salient angle" were new ones to me. Look the terms up for some surprises.
