10 Minute Task

Listen to the government's rhetoric: We want Measurable Performance Standards!" Is this desire new....

In 1976, someone introduced a bill to the Georgia's General Assembly...it would require all 4th grade students to be able to recite or write the 1 - 12 multiplication tables in 10 minutes or less before they could be promoted to the 5th grade.

That's a measureable performance standard! Most of the members of the General Assembly probably could not have met that standard.

Perhaps that is why it was not passed and enacted, as the legislators would have to turn-in their "5th grade" diplomas!

Also, I am not sure I could write the 1 - 12 multiplication tables in 10 minutes or less. Where does such a crazy standard come from?

Oops...somehow I got confused and shifted my focus to our modern state standards!
