130 Years Ago, Alas!

Consider these goals for a mathematics teacher:

  1. To impart new and valuable instruction adapted in kind and amount to the condition of the minds of our pupils,
  2. To teach pupils to think by so guiding their inquiries so they shall discover truths for themselves,
  3. To make them thorough by requiring accurate recitations and explanations, and,
  4. To keep them interested in their study.
Not bad...worthy of subscribing to when working with today's students. In fact, I think they are more positive than the Common Core Standards, which get diluted by a focus on skill-based content.

The author: John H. French, in his Elementary Arithmetic for the Slate. It was published in 1881.

Where is the echo of his voice amidst our current insanity!
