130 Years Ago, Alas!
Consider these goals for a mathematics teacher:
Not bad...worthy of subscribing to when working with today's students. In fact, I think they are more positive than the Common Core Standards, which get diluted by a focus on skill-based content.
- To impart new and valuable instruction adapted in kind and amount to the condition of the minds of our pupils,
- To teach pupils to think by so guiding their inquiries so they shall discover truths for themselves,
- To make them thorough by requiring accurate recitations and explanations, and,
- To keep them interested in their study.

Where is the echo of his voice amidst our current insanity!
