Super Quiz

Guest Columnist: D. E. (Seattle) writes...

In today’s Seattle Times, we’ve got the daily “super quiz”, which today is themed "science."

9 questions. 3 easy, 3 medium, 3 hard.

#8 (so hard): What are the first four numbers of a Fibonacci series?

Answer given: 0, 1, 1, 2

Commentary: Starting with 0 is interesting, because if we go back to rabbits, that would make having more rabbits difficult.

Also: it said a Fibonacci series. Interesting. Then there’s no specific answer, right? How about 1, 4, 5, 9, 14…?

Finally: whoops: it’s not a series, it’s a sequence.

After that bad start, it’s refreshing to see #9:

#9: In trigonometry, what is calculated by the adjacent over the hypotenuse?

Answer given: cosine. Well played.

It’d be nice for the problem to be given a little more context, but they don’t have much space.

Happy Saturday!

Thanks, David...
