Time to Celebrate!
Mathematics teachers...it is time to honor another great manipulative...
This is the 50th anniversary of the creation of Play-Doh, a compound (U.S. Patent 3,167,440) originally meant to be a wall-paper cleaner.
Over 900,000,000 pounds of Play-Doh have been sold...probably one-third of that to mathematics teachers who want their students to build models of geometric solids/shapes. (Sample lesson plan)
And the strangest thing (but nothing to do with mathematics)...in honor of the 50th anniversary, the well-recognized smell of Play-Doh has been turned into a fragrance by the Demeter Fragrance Library and the cologne/perfume is available at $19 per ounce.
