Madonna Means Mathematics

Interesting examples of mathematics occurs daily...if we happen to catch them!

For example, in England, poverty is defined as "anyone living below 60% of average disposable income." Then Madonna moved in....

The established cutoff for the "average disposable income" instantly shot up, and a whole group of additional people were now shifted to the "poverty" group.

Would this have happened if the measure had been the median value and not the mean value? And why wouldn't the mode be a good criterion for determining poverty levels?

This example could prompt class discussions, similar to investigating why the average salary of all cultural geography graduates from the University of North Carolina is extremely large...
