An Essay Contest for Your Students

Why not have your students write an essay for a worthwhile contest (and as part of your course)?

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is hosting an essay contest, asking students to write a biography of a contemporary woman mathematician or statistician working in academic, industrial, or government careers. The goal is to increase awareness of women's contributions to mathematics. So...if you or your students do not know of any female mathematicians or statisticians, now is a good time to hunt one down!

The categories for submissions are students in grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and/or college undergraduates. They AWM suggests that the essay be built primarily from personal interviews with female mathematicians or statisticians.

And yes, there is a prize in each category, plus the winning essays will be published in the AWM Newsletter.

Deadline: November 2, 2007
