But Did He Walk While in Town?

A man walks to town at the rate of 4 mi. per hour and rides back at the rate of 10 mi. per hour after remaining in town 1 hr. He was absent 8 hr. How far did he walk?

Note: The unusual aspect of this "algebra" problem was that the student was asked to solve it using a graph.
