Eight Eights, Ay!

My neighbor A.D., a retired Canadian electrician originally from Germany, shared a mathematics problem while attending a summer BBQ in my back yard. In his excitement while sharing the problem, he claimed that it was an "old German favorite" that he had worked on as a young kid and still remembered it. Now, if only we can get our students to remember some of our math problems sixty years later!

Statement of the problem: Using eight 8's and the four basic operations (+ - x /), write an expression equal to 1000.

Hint: You can "paste" some of the 8's together to form a multi-digit number....

Solution Commentary: Two final hints. First, all you need is addition...and think...how many 8's could be in the units column in order to produce a 0?

That should be enough help....
