Driver Distractions Delineated

In Washington State, 93.5 % of all collisions are due to drunken driving, excessive speed, and/or drugs. The other twelve "top" factors that led to collisions are (in alphabetical order):

  • Driver adjusting audio or entertainment
  • Driver distractions outside vehicle
  • Driver eating or drinking
  • Driver grooming
  • Driver interacting with passengers, animals or objects in vehicle
  • Driver operating handheld telecommunication device
  • Driver operating hands-free wireless telecommunications device
  • Driver operating other electronic device (computer, navigational devices, etc.)
  • Driver reading or writing
  • Driver smoking
  • Other driver distractions inside vehicle
  • Unknown driver distraction
Similarily, out of 57,000 collisions (6-month periodd, 2006), the following are the total number of collisions attributed to the above twelve distraction factors (ordered highest to lowest)
  • 939
  • 836
  • 752
  • 666
  • 557
  • 228
  • 170
  • 69
  • 62
  • 35
  • 25
  • 18
Task: Can you match them up correctly...distraction to number of collisions?
