Together Don Magee and I Could Do 3,012!

Don Magee, a retired school superintendent, does pushups! A grandfather of four, he lives in Lilburn, GA.

To help celebrate his 74th birday, Don did 3,010 pushups!

His comment afterwards: "I wanted to make a statement that just because you're old doesn't mean you can't do things."

Also, the next day, his arms were not sore...and he went out and played golf. In fact, he now claims that he "could have done a few hundred more."

To maintain his skills, Don does between 300 and 700 push-ups a day, plus some circuit training.

Your Task: Does his feat seem feasible? That is, 3,010 pushups in what time period? To check, determine the rate of pushups/minute assuming Don did the feat in:

  • 24 hours
  • 18 hours
  • 12 hours
Do you think he did it?

Side Note: Don Magee actually started off with 600 pushups in about 35 minutes, then did sets of 100 throughout the day. About thirteen hours after he started, he did the 3,010th pushup!
