A Question With a Surprising (But Not-Understandable) Answer

This month's issue of The Smithsonian includes an overview of Americans' knowledge about science. The article is based on their representative poll of 1,006 American adults throughout the United States. In addition to posing science-related questions, the pollsters asked the question: From kindergarten through 12th grade, what one subject should schools emphasize more?

The results are somewhat surprising:

. The question that remains...but not asked of each polled adult: What do you mean by mathematics?

Note: If you want to read the article and take the science quiz (interesting?), you might be able to still find it on-line...or you will need to search out a hard copy.
