I C A UFO....U C 1?

Issued on March 1, 1967, the Air Force's Project Blue Book created quite a stir, both among the public and government officials. The book details investigations of unidentified flying objects (i.e. UFOs!).

Project Blue Book included this data regarding total UFO sightings and their "identification" status:

  • 1947: 122 sightings, 12 unidentified
  • 1948: 156 sightings, 7 unidentified
  • 1949: 186 sightings, 22 unidentified
  • 1950: 210 sightings, 27 unidentified
  • 1951: 169 sightings, 22 unidentified
  • 1952: 1501 sightings, 303 unidentified
  • 1953: 509 sightings, 42 unidentified
  • 1954: 487 sightings, 46 unidentified
  • 1955: 545 sightings, 24 unidentified
  • 1956: 670 sightings, 14 unidentified
  • 1957: 1006 sightings, 14 unidentified
  • 1958: 627 sightings, 10 unidentified
  • 1959: 390 sightings, 12 unidentified
  • 1960: 557 sightings, 14 unidentified
  • 1961: 591 sightings, 13 unidentified
  • 1962: 474 sightings, 15 unidentified
  • 1963: 399 sightings, 14 unidentified
  • 1964: 562 sightings, 19 unidentified
  • 1965: 887 sightings, 16 unidentified
  • 1966: 1060 sightings, 30 unidentified
Total over 20 years: 11,108 sightings, 676 unidentified

So, what would you do with this data to make it more understandable...especially since it shook the world at that time?

If you graph it, can you see any patterns?

Is it possible to use the data to make predictions? For example, how many sightings and unidentifieds would you expect in 2014?

To consider recent data (the amount is surprising!), search the Internet. Some possible websites are those for the National UFO Reporting Center, UFO Sightings Report, UFO Stalker, and UFOEvidence.org...one can easily find visual maps of the sightings by geobgraphical location...more patterns to look at!

For example, UFOEvidence.org reports "several hundred thousand (estimated) UFO sightings have been documented over the last 50 years, and the total number of UFO sightings is estimated to be in the millions. At least several thousand sightings are reported each year. Only a small percentage of those who see a UFO report the sighting."

Also, according to many international surveys over the last twenty years, UFOEvidence.org concluded that "5-7% of people have seen a UFO, and 10-15% know someone who has seen a UFO." Have you?
