Those Who Laugh, Last!

William Fry, Stanford University researcher, is one of the country's leading gelotologists (from the Greek gelos which means "laughter"). In an experiment, he withdrew blood from lab subjects every few minutes while they watched a video of the comedian Gallagher. Based on his results, Fry claims that laughing heartily 100 times a day is equivalent (in calories lost) to that of using a rowing machine for 10 minutes, which burns 106 calories.

Now, how many times would you have to laugh to be equivalent to the following:

  • 10 minutes of writing, which burns 16 calories
  • 10 minutes of walking at 4 mph, which burns 78 calories
  • 10 minutes of vigorous swimming, which burns 148 calories
  • 10 minutes of riding a bicycle at 15 mph, which burns 160 calories
Finally, to lose one pound, you must burn 3,500 more calories than you take in as food....which is equivalent to laughing how many times in a day?
