Want a free 108-page book....that addresses the concerns of every mathematics teacher? Then, here is a deal for you!

A few years ago Washington State's Office of Public Instruction sponsored the writing of research documents related to teaching academic subjects. For the text specific to mathematics, the goal was to provide a research-based overview of the potential and challenges of teaching quality mathematics (K-12), in as friendly and useful manner as possible. The intent was to support teachers and administrators in their efforts to improve student learning in mathematics, and an increased awareness of research results is an important form of support.

The end-result, Teaching and Learning Mathematics: Using Research to Shift From the "Yesterday" Mind to the "Tomorrow" Mind has four main parts:

  • Discussion of what research in mathematics education can and cannot do;
  • Overview research results related to content (number sense, measurement, geometry sense, probability and statistics, algebraic sense) and process (problem solving, communication, mathematical reasoning, and connections);
  • Address specific questions in mathematics education raised by teachers, administrators, and parents;
  • Outline a plan that a teacher, district, or state can follow to maintain relevancy in mathematics education.
Though the context for the text is Washington State's Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs), the research summaries translate to any instructional program consistent with the NCTM Standards.
