Poetry and Mathematics

For too many, mathematics evokes negative feelings: harshness, coldness, pretentiousness, foreign, etc. How is it possible to bring some warmth into mathematics?

Connecting mathematics to poetry, or vice versa, is perhaps one solution (but not a silver bullet for all). And, I am not referring to the writing of peotry, but the reading of poetry.

Give Intersections: Poetry With Mathematics a try. The website is offered by JoAnne Growney, a poet and former mathematics professor.

The poetry offered on JoAnne's website includes poems by herself as well as other poets. I suggest you start by browsing infiormally untuil you find a poem that you either enjoy or connect with in some way.

If you cannot find any, why not write one yourself....
