I would guess that most of you have heard of this week's web site, though perhaps you have never gotten around to visiting or using it. The web site is Illuminations by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Illuminations was designed for two reasons. First, it tries to provide Standards-based resources that enhance both the teaching and learning of mathematics for all students. And second, it provides materials that "illuminate" the NCTM vision for mathematics education reform as proposed in Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
So what do you find on the Illuminations site?
What is missing? The site doesn't list MATHNEXUS.WWU.EDU as a recommended web site!
- A library of 73 "reviewed" online activities (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) that enliven mathematics in both classrooms and homes.
- A collection of 512 "reviewed" lessons (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12) keyed to both the content and process standards.
- A nice summary of the NCTM content and process standards, with "electronic" examples.
- Links to 726 mathematics web-based resources, again sorted according to the content and process standards.
