The Dot and The Line...A Classic!

Some of you may remember reading The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics, a neat story written and illustrated by Norton Juster (1963). And, some of you may remember watching or showing The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics, a classic animated film by Chuck Jones (1965). The film won the 1965 Academy Award for Animated Short Film.

Though the book version of The Dot and a Line is still available, the film version unfortunately disappeared as a 16 mm relic....then mysteriously re-appeared as a trailer on the DVD The Glass Bottom Boat (2005). I am not sure what Doris Day and Rod Taylor have to do with a mathematical adventure.

Now, you can see the video version of The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics on-line, thanks to YouTube. There, you can once again re-live the agonizing adventures of a sensible straight line who falls in love with a dot, who has a thing for the "wild and unkempt squiggle." However, everything works out for the best at the end, with some interesting geometry intervening.
