

Results of a ReSearch of Research Results (Part 1)In January, I recommended a free resource, that used "soundbytes" to provide a researchbased overview of the potential and challenges of teaching quality mathematics (K12). If you have some extra money that you want to spend on similar resources, a few good choices are available. Two texts are reviewed below...more will be reviewed in next week's edition of this web site. McRel's EdThoughts: What We Know About Mathematics Teaching and Learning summarizes educational research and surveys of best practices in classrooms. General topic headings are Mathematics for All, Teaching Mathematics, Assessment, Curriculum, Instructional Technology, and Learning Mathematics. The book's format is on the side of friendly. A question is posed (e.g. What are the impacts of ability grouping and tracking on student learning?). Then, after a brief summary of key research results (with full references), the authors suggest the classroom implications. A good inexpensive resource. Corwin Press' Tips for the Mathematics Teacher: ResearchBased Strategies to Help Students Learn summarizes educational, psychological, and sociological research in a format that teachers can put "into practice quickly and easily." In contrast to the previous text, the Chapters now focus on Instructional Techniques, Social Aspects of Classrooms, Beyond the Classroom, and Developing Positive Attitudes About Mathematics. Again, the book's format is on the side of friendly. A tip is stated (e.g. Teachers can help students learn to ask better questions). Then, after a brief summary of key research results (with full references), the authors suggest possible classroom applications of the tip, as well as identifying precautions and possible ptfalls. A somewhat more expensive resource. As a set, the two resources complement the free resource first identified...but then I am either biased or cheap!
